The First Day Iceland

Wednesday June 23, 2010

My cousin Purr gave us a ride from Eau Claire to the twin cities airport.  Ann rode along.  We took our Camry.  We were dropped off at the MSP airport with our three Rick Steves backpack bags.  After some rearranging we were able to get them down to less than 6 kg each in order to carry them on the airplane.

The Icelandic Aire flight left on time.  They had TV/Videos on the backs of each seat.  We used our iPod headphones to listen but did not get much sleep.  We had left the USA at 7:30 PM (Iceland is 5 hours ahead of MSP so that's a 5.5 hour flight) and arrived in Iceland at ~6 AM on Thursday June 24, 2010.

We waited at the airport until 9 AM (Icelandic time) and then took a bus through Iceland to the Blue Lagoon.

We started watching for Domino's wherever we went.

There were some type of statues or rock sculptures along the highway.  Not sure if they had a purpose or if they were just aesthetic.  I don't remember if there were just piles of rocks or if they were statues.

This shows the volcanic rock terrain around the Blue Lagoon  region and some of the water.

Matt and I at the entrance to the Blue Lagoon Resort
The Blue Lagoon is a natural hot spring with bluish white water.
The fine silica is used as a facial treatment.  We soaked in the hot waters, tried the sauna and water fall, then showered off and went to get something to eat.
The path to the resort is walled by volcanic rock.

There are some lichens and mosses growing on the rocks.

Here's the entrance to the resort.

The waters outside are milky blue.

This is at the resort.  Matt is showering off.

Laurie in the hot springs.  The lagoon is warm and hot water comes into the lagoon from a reservoir.  The water is mixed with seawater so it is salty.
We had Icelandic Yogurt, Skyr, at the Blue Lagoon snack shop but actually the skyr on the plane was much better.  The robes were not a good deal - Laurie got one.  We also found that once you leave the bathing area you can't return.  So you can't go and eat and then go back and swim for a while.  You have to essentially check out before you can go to the restaurant.  Laurie was disappointed that we had to return to the airport before the Icelandic buffet which included peppered whale among other things.  The buffet started at 12-12:30 but the shuttle to the plane would take too long we thought.  The terrain in this area was volcanic rock.  Our next flight was from Iceland to England Heathrow airport.  We had sushi on the plane.
This is a sculpture at the Iceland Airport.  It appears to be a hatching dragon.
